    Tendencias en dos poblaciones de cánidos silvestres tras 14 años de seguimiento en un área protegida recientemente ampliada en la Patagonia Austral Argentina

    El seguimiento de las poblaciones de fauna silvestre es clave para conservar la biodiversidad, así como para comprender el funcionamiento de los ecosistemas. Permite tomar decisiones de gestión adecuadas a las tendencias detectadas, siendo fundamental para comprender los procesos ecológicos que las explican. Presentamos los resultados del seguimiento realizado durante 14 años para dos cánidos patagónicos en simpatría, el zorro colorado (Pseudalopex culpaeus) y el zorro gris (Pseudalopex griseus), en el Parque Nacional Bosques Petrificados de Jaramillo (Patagonia Austral Argentina). El seguimiento se basó en estaciones de cebado para registrar huellas. Se instalaron 16 líneas cada año (6 estaciones/línea), en otoño y primavera, permaneciendo activas durante tres días consecutivos. Para el análisis de tendencias poblacionales se utilizaron regresiones de Poisson (Rtrim, software R) de forma general y a nivel de estación. La población de zorro colorado mostró una fuerte disminución general, con una tasa de descenso anual del 17%, que varió estacionalmente, siendo máxima en otoño (23%) y moderada en primavera (10%). Por el contrario, la población de zorro gris se incrementó significativamente de forma moderada, con valores similares a nivel general y estacional (~7%). Estos resultados concuerdan con la hipótesis de la “liberación” de mesodepredadores, por la que ante una disminución de competidores dominantes, como el zorro colorado, subordinados como el zorro gris, incrementan su abundancia. Igualmente, la reciente incorporación al parque de dos establecimientos ganaderos donde cesó la persecución del puma Puma concolor, que pudo recuperarse y paulatinamente excluir al zorro colorado, desencadenando lo observado para los zorros.Universidad de Málaga.     Real-World Analysis of the Therapeutic Management and Disease Burden in Chronic Myeloid Leukemia Patients with Later Lines in Italy

    Real world data are becoming a crucial tool to understand how cancer is treated in routine daily practice. This real-world analysis aims to describe the characteristics of patients with CML in 2nd or ≥3rd tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKI) lines of therapy, to evaluate their treatment sequence and utilization in settings of Italian clinical practice in Italy. A retrospective analysis was performed using an administrative databases covering around 15.3 million cases. All adult patients prescribed with TKI as 2nd or ≥3rd lines (L) of therapy for CML during January 2015–December 2018 were included. A total of 491 patients in 2nd and 144 in ≥3rd L was included. In both cohorts, hypertension was the most reported comorbidity, followed by metabolic and blood count alterations. In each calendar inclusion year, an increment of 97.6% was observed in the number of patients treated in ≥3rd L. In the 2nd L cohort, 18.7% had a switch to 3rd L, while 26.4% of ≥3rd L patients switched to a subsequent line. Around 40% in both lines discontinued their treatment after a median time of 5.5 (2nd L) and 4.3 (≥3rd L) years. The results provided insights into CML management clinical practice, indicating a heavy disease burden for patients in later lines that showed an increasing complex management, and suggest that a need for novel treatment strategies might exists

    : VEXAS is a prototypic hemato-inflammatory disease combining rheumatologic and hematologic disorders in a molecularly defined nosological entity. In this nationwide study, we aimed at screenshotting the current diagnostic capabilities and clinical-genomic features of VEXAS, and tracked UBA1 longitudinal clonal dynamics upon different therapeutics, including allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplant. We leveraged a collaboration between the Italian Society of Experimental Hematology and of Rheumatology and disseminated a national survey to collect clinical and molecular patient information. Overall, 13/29 centers performed UBA1 genomic testing locally, including Sanger sequencing (46%), next-generation sequencing (23%), droplet digital polymerase chain reaction (8%), or combination (23%). A total of 41 male patients were identified, majority (51%) with threonine substitutions at Met41 hotspot, followed by valine and leucine (27% and 8%). Median age at VEXAS diagnosis was 67 years. All patients displayed anemia (median hemoglobin 9.1 g/dL), with macrocytosis. Bone marrow vacuoles were observed in most cases (89%). The most common rheumatologic association was polychondritis (49%). A concomitant myelodysplastic neoplasm/syndrome (MDS) was diagnosed in 71% of patients (n = 28), chiefly exhibiting lower Revised International Prognostic Scoring System risk profiles. Karyotype was normal in all patients, except three MDS cases showing -Y, t(12;16)(q13;q24), and +8. The most frequently mutated gene was DNMT3A (n = 10), followed by TET2 (n = 3). At last follow-up, five patients died and two patients progressed to acute leukemia. Longitudinal UBA1 clonal dynamics demonstrated mutational clearance following transplant. We collected a nationwide interdisciplinary VEXAS patient cohort, characterized by heterogeneous rheumatologic manifestations and treatments used. MDS was diagnosed in 71% of cases.     IDENTIFICATION OF TOP QUARKS USING KINEMATIC VARIABLES

    We have used a kinematic technique to distinguish top quark pair production from background in pp collisions at s=1.8 TeV, applied to 67 pb-1 of data. We define a sample of W+3 jet events in which the jets are produced at large angles relative to the incident beams. In this sample, we find an excess of events with large jet transverse energies relative to expectations from background. The excess is consistent with top quark production; a large fraction of events in this kinematic region contains b jets. We interpret these results as evidence that most of the selected events are from tt decay. © 1995 The American Physical Society
